About Us

We are family business, consisting of farm founder Shana and the next generation, siblings Sarah and Zachary. Zach is a master craftsman and orchard enthusiast with a background in landscape design and commercial construction. Sarah is the business manager and splits her time between Seattle and Orcas. She enjoys exploring the natural wonders of the islands and nurturing the gardens and animals on the farm.

Once In A Blue Moon Farm is located on the west side of the island on the sunny south western slopes of Mt. Woolard. We are just two miles from the ferry landing and only a 10 minute drive to Eastsound.

An early island homestead, the farm has grown food and raised animals for over 130 years. The land was settled by the Boede family in the 1880’s and after an eventful history of ups and downs (including being lost in a poker game), it was sold to the Eastmans in 1955. In the 1980’s, the third owner built a new barn and main residence, incorporating the front facade of the 1920 farmhouse. Shana acquired the farm in 1997 and established Once In A Blue Moon Farm. See the original log cabin and learn more about the history of Orcas Island at the Orcas Historical Museum.

We grow specialty fruits and raise birds for eggs. You can find our fruit and eggs at restaurants and markets on the island as well as some of the finest restaurants in Seattle. Or better yet get it directly from us during your stay on the farm. Fresh duck eggs available most of the year. Fruit usually begins the month of July, starting with peaches and plums, moving on to figs, apples, pears, quince and more!
